Street arts
The FETA festival was established in 1997 originally as a one-off venture, with the aim of being an extravagant celebration to commemorate the thousand years of Gdańsk. For 7 days the city was transformed beyond recognition – numerous theatres from all over the world entertained, provoked, but also moved the citizens of Gdańsk and many tourists. Street theatres, full of their charm and magic were unforgettable, and the actors enchanted spectators.
Since then, during every FETA festival, the city has become a stage for unusual performances. During the last 10 events, around 250 theatres from all over the world have performed. Among them were also small theatres, all of whose performances had a tremendous impact. In 2002 the Spanish theatre Xarxa performed “Veles e vents”, which premiered at the opening of the Channel Tunnel; and three years ago the Norwegian theatre Stella Polaris performed, who previously opened the winter Olympics at Lillehammer. Always a great tourist attraction is the possibility for spectators to have a go at the difficult circus acts by taking part in open workshops.
