SITES OF SOPOT


Sopot is a touristic city that has a health resort status. The city is hidden behind moraine hills from the land and behind the Hel Penisula from the seaside. This means that there are few gusty winds in Sopot and no cold water from the depths of the Baltic Sea. Trees, monumental parks and beautiful gardens cover about 60% of Sopot's area. You can find natural landscapes there and secessional tenement-houses, recreation places and monuments among them. There is a really unique atmosphere in Sopot.

MonciakHeroes of Monte Cassino Street is the most popular promenade in Sopot. The street leads to the longest wooden pier in Europe. There are numerous cafes, bars, restaurants and shops lining the street. There are also two cinemas, where you can watch the latest films and a theatre located in charming, eclectic and neo-gothic house. You can see here street musicians, painters, portraitists, caricaturists and many more interesting people from all over the world.

Krzywy Dom - UM SopotThe Crooked House on Monte Cassino Street was built in 2003. There are pubs, restaurants and shops inside. Tired tourists can step inside and rest in a restaurant or bar, hidden from the sun, and have a cold drink. There is also the Pomeranian Museum of Modern Marine Craft on the third floor.

MoloThe Wooden Pier is the longest wooden pier in Europe. This is a symbol of Sopot. It is 511.5 metres long and is visited by 1.5 to 2 million tourists a year. Many concerts, festivals and sports competitions take place here, especially in the summer. You can watch the Baltic Windsurfing Cup competition and the Sopot Triathlon.. The pier also serves as a yacht marina. If you like, you can take a boat trip from here. At the end of the pier you will find telescopes, which you can use to view the panorama of Sopot or Hel Peninsula.

The Forest Opera House is situated on Moniuszki Street. The International Song Festival has taken place here every August since 1963. The Opera House was built in 1909. It is surrounded by numerous trees and has fantastic acoustics. In the inter-war period the Forest Opera was famous for its Wagner Festivals.

The Grand Hotel stands very near to the beach. It was built between 1924-1927 and was one of the greatest hotels in Northern Europe. This monumental building appeals to rich tourists from all over the world. This is the place where famous people stay while in Sopot.

WojciechKościół św. JerzegoSt. Georges Church on Heroes of Monte Cassino Street was built between 1899 and 1901. This neo-gothic church was founded by Empress Augusta Wiktoria and Emperor Wilhelm II. He gave the order to build the church tower high enough to be seen by ships in the bay.

Next to the church there is a chapel, built in 1909. In the past it was a street well. Now the chapel has a figure of St. Wojciech under its little roof.

Zakład BalneologicznyThe Balneologic House with a Lighthouse is situated at the end of Monte Cassino Street. It was built between 1903 and 1904. The Lighthouse is open in high season and its entrance is on the wooden pier side. From the top of the lighthouse you can see beautiful sights: the pier, ships in the bay, Hel Peninsula and Sopot city. There is a memorial board devoted to George Haffner - the founder of the baths. In the Balneologic House you can take a healthy bath in salted waters and try inhalation.

The Museum of Sopot - Claaszen's Villa is situated near the promenade by the sea in a beautiful green park. The villa was built by Ernst Claaszen in 1903, and since 2001 it has been the Museum of Sopot, where every possible relic from the past connected with Sopot is gathered (old maps, tourist guides, postcards, documents, the menus from hotels and guesthouses, family photo albums, etc.).

The South Baths is a wooden building built in 1907, based on an old Norwegian architectural style. It is situated near the promenade by the sea. Today there is a hotel inside The South Baths. The interiors of the hotel are Chinese in style.
