Gdańsk - The oldest city in the Region Gdansk is a historical city, the biggest economic, academic and cultural centre on the coast of Poland. The city is situated on Gdansk Bay at the mouth of the Vistula River and is the capital of the Tri-city. It is over a thousand years old and has countless monuments mostly located in the Old Town, but also in the suburbs.
The most beautiful and popular streets of Gdansk are Long Street and The Long Market, which is why they are often crowded. The streets can take your breath away with their beautiful tenement-houses and very interesting archways and gates which open on to them. Here you can find the famous Neptune Fountain - the symbol of Gdansk, The Artus Court and the former seat of the Gdansk authorities - The Main City Hall. You can start sightseeing right from here, admiring the Old Town and its surrounding streets. You mustn't miss one of the most valuable gems of Gdansk, which is St. Mary's Street leading from St. Mary's Church to the medieval St. Mary's Gate.
The most famous and the oldest Gdansk celebration is St. Dominic's Fair which has been held every summer for over 740 years. Apart from traditional trading, the main attractions of the fair are performances given by dance groups wearing regional costumes, and duelling knights . St. Dominic's Fair is started and ended with a fireworks display.
Gdansk is not only a symbol of medieval history, but it is also the birthplace of the "Solidarnosc" trade union, which contributed to the subversion of the totalitarian system in Europe. It was the 25th anniversary of Solidarity last year and Gdansk celebrated this great moment at the end of August and beginning of September 2005.
