Sopot - the most famous seaside resort on the South Baltic You can find the first references to Sopot in early medieval manuscripts, but the town's real rise is due to John George Haffner (19th century), who made Sopot a famous health resort. There are a lot of villas and guesthouses with characteristic verandas and roofs, having been slowly renovated so that they almost look as if they were new.
The main street in Sopot is Monte Cassino Heros Street. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants lining the street. They are filled with tourists and residents in summer, especially during the period of the International Festival of Song which is held every year in the Forest Opera.
At the end of the street you reach the beautiful pier - the greatest gem of Sopot. This is the longest wooden pier in Europe, a place for walking and many celebrations. It is also a great place to admire the sight of Gdansk Bay. Furthermore, you can take a trip around the bay from here.
Sopot is a place where you can find a lot of monuments mainly connected with its health resort character. There are (among other things) Dom Zdrojowy, Zaklad Balneologiczny (there is a beautiful view of Sopot and Puck Bay from the tower) and Lazienki Poludniowe. Moreover, you can find the old neo-gothic style St. George's Church and an interesting well adorned with a statue of St. Wojciech in front of the church, and much more.
Also worth seeing is the Medieval castle, with traces of it's existance going back as far as the Stone Age.
